is it weird that i’m only now starting to watch Downton Abbey?
I was going to post a picture of myself right now. In bed surrounded by dirty kleenex, wearing a thermal shirt with holes in it, sipping lukewarm water through a straw, glassy-eyed, raw-nosed, dirty glasses… but you don’t want to see it.
Henry’s Tacos served its last taco yesterday. I grew up just blocks from this LA fixture. Over the years it hasn’t changed at all, the menu the same, the signs the same, and always closed on Sundays. But now it has to move.
It was the place we stopped between middle school and dance class. Where my mom would idle in the car while I ran up to the window. The place my sister and I would walk to on summer afternoons, pooling our cash so we could eat soft tacos and burritos on their picnic benches out front. Our refrigerator always seemed to have a couple extra containers of Henry’s hot sauce tucked away. There was a wind-tunnel effect at the stand, so that when you approached the window, you were hit with a delicious-smelling blast of warm air. They’re one of the only places I remember that served crushed ice with their drinks. The sign has never changed.
When I began college in New York — far from home in a city that was too crowded, too loud, and too fast around me — one of the first comforting sights I saw was another student wearing a Henry’s Tacos t-shirt. It was like seeing home.
I’m going to miss this place. It’s being relocated, and hopefully its devotees will follow it and keep it an institution. I know I will. But I’m going to miss seeing it on that perfect street corner, announcing to me as my car makes the turn, “almost home.”

How I feel RIGHT now!
So I think the joint birthday party for our two girls (age 1 and age 3) has officially gone out of control. We have over 60 RSVPed guests (both adults and children). Thank goodness for Mrs. Michelle and her amazing party planning, because otherwise I would just be way overwhelmed.
You rock, Michelle!!

I chose this to start off my new tumblr. because now that I am a mother myself, I find myself trying to be like my mom a lot. Throughout my day I often think: WWMMD (what would my mom do).
I’m not exactly sure what form this blog will take. It will probably be a combination of my daily inspirations from the different roles I play as a mother, college professor, art and architecture historian, a Southern Californian, and a Jewish woman living in the 21st century.
